Gartley Backyard

These retired clients wanted an outdoor dining and entertaining space with a stepless transition from the indoors. We removed their old deck, which was in the shadow of the house, and put in an English-garden-style covered dining space that borrowed elements from their ‘50s-era ranch house and the existing woven cedar fence. We placed the structure away from the house to get more sunlight, create a greater sense of space and take advantage of long views into and out of the structure. Plantings are mostly native, wetland and hummingbird friendly species, and a raingarden and permeable pavers were installed to mitigate drainage issues. Side yard improvements, including new gate, pavers and plantings, improve access and provide views out of a bedroom and bathroom.
