Johnston-Rear Bathrooms

This is the second project we have done on this quintessentially modern home designed by noted architect De Unthank, and as with the first, the clients wanted to remodel the baths consistent with the modern vision of Unthank’s architecture.

In the guest bath we opened part of the wall between the vanity area and the rest of the bath to create a more open feel and to let the light from the skylight spill over to the vanity. We replaced the linoleum floor with large format tile, we replaced the low tub with a deeper soaking tub, retiled the surround, and extended it all the way behind the toilet. And at the vanity we replaced the old cabinet with a new floating one and added a quartzite top and tile splash.

In the primary bath to open things up we removed the wall between the vanity area and the rest of the bath, expanded the bath slightly by removing a closet in an adjoining room and removed a floor-to-ceiling linen cabinet. In place of the tall cabinet, we installed a lower cabinet with a new window above it. We installed a large tile shower in place of the tub/shower and extended the tile surround all the way behind the toilet and vanity. We replaced the vanity with a floating one with a quartzite top and replaced the old tile floor with a new, large-format tile floor with radiant heat.

The baths now have a fresh new feel while still honoring Unthank’s vision.
