Judy’s Cottage

Located behind one of her daughters’ homes, this small 768 square foot backyard cottage was designed and built for Judy, a retired schoolteacher with a wonderful smile and a great sense of humor. Most importantly, however, Judy is a grandmother who loves to bake for her family and have them close, and that was the main theme we centered the project around.

The exterior matches the main house, and the covered front porch is just off the garage where Judy parks her car. The interior has a modern farmhouse style with bright cheery spaces and views of the surrounding property. The kitchen is small but functional and has plenty of room for Judy to bake cookies for grandkids. The dining room doubles as a sewing area, the bathroom has a freestanding tub and a separate shower, and the walk-in closet has a stacked washer and dryer and linen cabinet. The living room and bedroom are comfortable sizes and both open to the large south-facing covered porch overlooking the meadow and forest beyond.

Both of Judy’s daughters are married with kids and Judy wanted a house that was right sized for her but also large enough to have everyone over, and we were so happy and honored to help her realize her dream.

“When it was time to move mom closer to us, we knew we wanted Rainbow Valley to design and build an ADU for her. From our initial meeting with Dean, then meeting Alec and Nic, we knew we were in good hands. They were open to our ideas but also great helping us envision details we didn’t think of. We looked forward to every meeting! They have a wealth of knowledge and an amazing ability to make the new construction blend into the existing surroundings. We never would have thought the ADU would look like an extension of our home, but it truly does. Our mom could not be happier, and we love having her so close. We are so thankful to Rainbow Valley and especially to Alec, Nic, and their team.”
