King Remodel

This extensive remodel utilized the foundation of the original house to create what is essentially a new home. With the existing garage, foundation, and site to build on, we created a home that is light-filled, well-organized and deeply connected to its surroundings.

The new house is sized for two people but designed to accommodate larger gatherings. The vaulted living room focuses around a large Tulikivi masonry fireplace that keeps the house cozy through the winter and, along with an integrated generator, is essential during winter power outages. The kitchen was expanded and is now open to the dining and living rooms. And the new stair and hall design creates an open central circulation hub between garage, great room, bedrooms, and 2nd floor studio.

On the exterior, a large, covered patio connects the living room to the landscape and meadow beyond. Stone pathways and fire-wise landscaping settle the house into the surroundings. And the new covered entry porch with both stair and ramp for accessibility invites guests to the front door.

All this making a peaceful oasis in the country and a perfect place to retire.

Our 1980s house was well suited for a young family but didn’t meet our needs. After consulting local builders, we engaged Rainbow Valley. Lead designer, Scott Felsher, was great at working within our budget and special requests. Those included an open kitchen and living area, expanded second story and a Tulikivi soapstone wood burner. The construction and landscaping crews seamlessly managed the process and kept us in the loop. We also appreciated their recommendations for local sources and subcontractors which simplified choosing materials and finishing touches. Everyone at Rainbow Valley helped keep things on track, leading to a beautiful house and grounds that we are happy to call home.
