Turner Guest House
At Silly Goose Farm, Andrea wanted to create more than just a guest suite – she envisioned a space where visitors could slow down, connect with the land, and experience life on the farm. Tucked into the attic above a garage, the new suite offers a welcoming home base for workshops, farm stays, and family gatherings. With every design choice, we looked for ways to honor the farm’s history, its landscape, and Andrea’s thoughtful stewardship.
The centerpiece of the suite is a pair of converging live-edge barn doors, crafted from a 300-year-old oak that once stood in front of the farmhouse. After an ice storm brought it down, Andrea saved and cured the slabs, waiting for the right project. We finished and shaped them into doors that now serve as both a dramatic focal point and a tangible link to the farm’s story. The same oak was also used to create the dining table and buffet top, grounding the new space in the heritage of the land. White oak flooring from a sustainably managed Willamette Valley mill adds warmth and continuity throughout.
From the hidden playroom tucked behind knee walls – accessed by secret passage or closet hatch – to the light-filled bathroom with a claw-foot tub and custom tile shower, the suite was designed with equal parts practicality and delight. Outside, a rebuilt stair and deep-roofed porch create a gracious entry that matches the main house while giving guests a place to pause, watch the animals, and take in the sunset. The result is a retreat that feels timeless, deeply personal, and ready to welcome anyone eager to learn, rest, and share in the beauty of Silly Goose Farm.
The design process was awesome. I love it when someone opens my eyes to new ideas and incorporates my wishes so beautifully. The skill and craftsmanship of their team and collaborators is outstanding. We hosted the first guests and their reaction to the space was: “I just want to compliment you on your place. The quality and the finish work is very nice. We just built a new home so I notice the quality of what you have done!” RBV also made intricate and critical repairs to the main house to ensure a long healthy life for my home. I have come to know, respect and admire so many members of the RBV family. They care about the work they do, the customers they serve and the world in which we live.
