Brock Remodel and Covered Patio

When John and Carla came to us, they had just acquired John’s childhood home and were excited to make it their forever home. They share a love for Craftsman style and wanted to infuse it with the Arts & Craft influence of their family’s vacation house along the northern California coast. Key goals included the creation of an open and welcoming timber front porch, creating light and airy connections between the interior spaces and the outdoors, and making sure that all of it would remain accessible as they aged in place.

Removing most of the interior walls in the living room, kitchen and dining areas created the connections that they were looking for, while built-in, alder cabinetry helped define space and create places within which to dwell. L-shaped patio areas can be tricky to cover, but by coming off at an angle drainage was solved, and an opportunity for a unique, vaulted dining space was created. The new bathroom harkens back to their coastal Mendocino house with a beach theme, and the handmade tile bathing room will remain accessible even if the future includes a wheelchair.

Our team of Dean, Tobin and Kevin remodeled our 60’s ranch house literally from the bottom of the septic tank to the top of the chimney, and we are so pleased with the result. Two things we appreciated were RV’s collaborative approach and their unwillingness to sacrifice quality. We had a rough notion of what we wanted at the start of the project, and by the end it had evolved to exactly what we wanted. Tobin would take ideas from anyone if he thought it made the result more to our liking, but he kept a subtle filter on things to keep the end result cohesive… Rainbow’s not the fastest nor the least expensive, but we were looking for a sense of quality and craftsmanship, and they delivered.
