Rosenow-Thompson Living Room and Kitchen

These clients came to us with a wonderful midcentury modern house on College Hill. The previous homeowners had remodeled the kitchen and living room using sleek modern materials and the clients wanted to bring it back in-line with a more earthy midmod style. They also wanted to expand the kitchen and make it more functional, and they wanted to make both spaces better for entertaining.

In the living room we removed the raised hearth to increase room for circulation and replaced the glass surround on the fireplace with raw steel panels coated with a clear finish. We added recessed lighting that shows off the fireplace and more evenly lights the room, and we replaced an open rail with a half wall to create better definition between the upper and lower areas of the living room.

In the kitchen, we removed a wall to get a little more breathing room and better connect the kitchen to the living room and entry. We added a window to bring in more natural light and get more of the stunning south hills view. We added an island to increase counter area and provide seating for guests, and we gave it a curve to ease circulation through and around the space.

In choosing materials for the kitchen, the clients have a beautiful Plein Air style painting that was used for inspiration, and a palette of materials was selected to fit in with the period style of the house but at the same time feel very contemporary. The floors are a very large format 24”x48” porcelain tile, the cabinets are rift white oak with a clear lacquer finish, the perimeter counters are antiqued Cambrian Black granite, the island is honed Super White dolomite marble and the backsplash is Kat + Roger tile from Pratt + Larson.
